Is it true that Facebook Causes Changes in Brain Structure?

Scientists in London found an association between the number of friends you have in Facebook (FB) and brain size. The study says that using online social networking could affect the structure of the human brain. The brain has four parts that have a role in memory, emotional response and social interaction. Researchers from University College London (UCL) uses magnetic resonance imaging (NMR) to examine the brains of 125 college students active users of social networking sites FB.The students who become the object of research have around 300-1000 FB friends. With more than 800 million active users worldwide FB, FB has become a major component of social interaction, especially among young people.

Their results indicate a strong relationship between the FB and the 'gray matter' in the amygdala, right suprerior temporal sulcus, the left middle temporal gyrus and the right entorhinal cortex.'Grey Matter' is coat the tissue that influence human mental. The thickness of the 'gray matter' in the amygdala is closely related to the number of friends from the real world (not online). However, the size of the 'gray matter' of the other three networks mentioned only affected when there is an online connection. So far there have not been able to conclude whether the number of friends on FB can affect specific brain regions become larger. "An interesting question is now whether this structure can change over time, will help us answer the question whether the use of the Internet will be changing our brains," said Geraint Rees, researchers from UCL.According to him, an online social networking is a massive effect on the brain, but we just understand a little. This research could slowly open discourse that by using modern tools, the internet can reasonably determine the effect of the human brain, "said Geraint. The research was welcomed by Heidi Johansen Berg, Oxford University lecturer. He is not involved in the research said the findings as interesting. But but according to him, no means FB as the only way that could alter the structure of the human brain."If today we have 100 new friends on FB, does not mean our brains grew eskok day," he said.
